The September morning is bright on the second day of my second week and my mood is brighter still. I need to stay away from Cal – in that way – but last night was the most I’ve laughed in weeks. Months. I think Cal and Damon and Leo could make Cullen town a slightly brighter place. Thank fuck.

There’s no text or call from Adam. I leave my phone under my pillow so I won’t be tempted to contact him, because his reaction to my call yesterday still sits like a cold little stone in my heart.

I leave the bedsit just before eight-thirty – something tells me Cal Keane won’t appreciate hanging around – to find him already outside, long legs straddling his bike.

Straddling—

He notices my blush. He always fucking notices my blush. Like he noticed my Are you going to kiss me? hesitation last night before I got into the taxi.

I wanted him to kiss me and I didn’t.

And he saw it.

Cal Keane is shrewd. Cal Keane is dangerous.

My stomach lurches.
